Angst
2025
João Mota da Costa (1954) develops photographic projects about the encounter between the world of our intellectual and emotional notions and the physical evidence our presence leaves on the earth, a constant search for the imagery of the precariousness of life in the selection of references that invoke the spectral representations of bodies or the fractal elements of nature. Our images are empty of the human, but the presence in all of them is evident in its intervention.
Angst is a project about the tragedy and anguish of our existence. Birth, life, and death are an inseparable whole of humanity, with human beings being the only beings conscious of their mortality; the questions of their existence are the true anguish of living. Thus, the question arises as to whether my images are a palliative for the anguish of my existence or whether they are the territory of death par excellence, the place on the brink of the abyss.
