Tim J. Veling

Dad, Pete, Opa

2022

Tim J. Veling is a photographer based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand. His practice is primarily focused on issues and people close to home and heart, with a strong autobiographical thread running across a range of long-term projects that interrogate concepts of family, land and belonging.

Tim worked closely with XYZ Books and Lisbon based designer, Joana Durães to develop the publication, Dad, Pete, Opa – a body of work that documents the last months of his father’s life. The work was edited and produced via a process of collaboration to heighten a narrative that speaks not only of anticipatory grief, but more importantly the mutual love, admiration and acceptance between father and child. While deeply personal, it's a relatable story that serves to remind us that love and life endure within people that remain after someone’s passing.

Tim spent time in Lisbon in October 2022 to take part of the final production process of the book, as well as to be present for the official launch and accompanying pop-up show held at A Ilha.
