Florian Maricourt

Tiger

June 2023

Florian Maricourt (1990) is a French artist, filmmaker, and photographer. His work encompasses mainly films, photographs and drawings. With a background in anthropology, his research explores alternative ways of inhabiting the world, outside mainstream systems. His work interrogates the (precarious) economic conditions of its production and the (liberated) material forms that emanate from it. His films are distributed by the Collectif Jeune Cinema, an experimental cinema distribution structure, and shown in exhibitions and festivals, in France and abroad.

His practice focuses on discrete resistance, poetical language, experimentation, and local knowledge. Through collaborative ethnography, his films and photos capture shared living experiences. Maricourt embraces a direct, intuitive, and evolving approach, employing various mediums from celluloid to smartphones. He also runs a tiny music label and explores bookbinding and circus arts.

During the residency, Maricourt worked on his series called “Tiger”. It is about Ying Qin, his neighbour, whom he photographed during the six years he spent in Les Lilas, Paris. He started photographing her by chance, and it was for fun that they continued, together, to write poems.
